Ringo starr son7/31/2023 ![]() Zak Starkey has developed an important tendency to eclectism, probably maturated in such an artistic household and through the relationships with incredible personalities developed throughout his childhood. All the rest is pretty vain and unimportant. Of course, touring with The Who and recording with Oasis can surely make you a rockstar, but, with that sentence, Zak defines what the whole point is about: to be a damn good player. In his own words, as highlighted in this interview with Modern Drummer, “I am not a rock’n’roll star. As a result, Zak had to teach himself how to get his arms around the instrument, inspired by the infinite stack of LPs he would find around his house as a young kid. One band after another, with recording projects sometimes being quitted, and years of trial-and-error processes, Zak reached an incredible success in the Nineties, when he started touring with his childhood heroes (and close friends), The Who members.ĭespite what you may think, Ringo Starr never taught Zak how to play the drums, in the attempt of discouraging him to join the music industry. Starting with pub gigs as part of underground bands as a teenager, he slowly walked up the ladder, collaborating with exceptional musicians along the way (Johnny Marr, John Entwistle, Adrian Smith, and many others). Zak Starkey might have had the privilege of finding himself in a golden network of musicians since the day of his birth, but, as for any other artist around, it took more than ten years of hard work with little-known bands for him to finally shine. Let’s dive into the story and the secrets of one of the most appreciated drummers of his generation. How did he get this far? How did his father’s influence, and the friendship with Keith Moon, affect his artistic choices? However, Zac Starkey, the son of the more-than-legendary Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, can support such a big burden quite effortlessly.Īn energetic, on-point, technically rich drummer, Starkey was able to make a name for himself, working out his long way to the top as any other ambitious musician, with his excellent drumming abilities and some serious drive. It can be pretty daunting, after all, to bear the weight of a big name on your shoulder. ![]() Zak has two daughters: Tatia Jayne, from a previous marriage, and Luna, with his partner of 17 years, Sharna “Sshh” Liguz.Being the child of a celebrity is not always a bed of roses, especially when you decide to follow in your talented parent’s footsteps. He also provided occasional drumming work for the British pop band Oasis in the early to mid aughts. After playing with the band on an off for more than a decade, Zak was made a permanent member in 2007. Zak played drums in various bands throughout the 80s and 90s, and joined The Who for their 1996 Quadrophenia tour. Since his father was good pals with the band’s members, Zak too was close to them while growing up, as Keith served as his godfather. It was late Who drummer Keith Moon who gave a young Zak his first drum kit. Jason also grew up to be a drummer before going to work various other jobs in the music industry.Īgainst his famous father’s hopes, Zak grew up to become a professional drummer, seen here in 2019 during a soundcheck with The Who before a performance at London’s Wembley Stadium. Like his older sibling, he was also born at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in Hammersmith, London. Ringo and Maureen’s second child, son Jason, arrived nearly two years after his big brother on August 19, 1967. Ringo’s musical pals eventually showed Zak the ropes on how to be a stickman, and he began his career as a professional rock drummer as a teen in the early 1980s. Ringo agreed, calling his first-born “a little smasher,” but also revealed, “I won’t let Zak be a drummer,” like himself.īut drumming was in his future, as Zak’s godfather, The Who’s drummer Keith Moon, bought him a drum kit for his 8th birthday. Maureen said upon Zak’s birth, “I’d like the baby to be like Ringo, but he need not necessarily follow in his father’s footsteps,” as a musician. It happened to be the same date that one of The Beatles’ most famous hits, “Yesterday,” was released. Their first child, son Zak, was born on September 13, 1965. The Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, served as Best Man and fellow Beatle George Harrison was present as a witness. ![]() ![]() Ringo proposed to Maureen in 1965, and they were married 21 days later on February 11 at London’s Caxton Hall Register Office.
